Mission Statement:  The primary objective of the Narragansett Fire Department is the protection of human life and property from fire, the prevention and suppression of fire, and to provide emergency medical service to the Town of Narragansett.  In addition, it shall be the prompt duty of the Fire Department to remove or cause the removal of all persons from danger whatever the cause.

The Narragansett Fire Department is a paid department consisting of 35 members. Below are a number of valuable services the fire department provides to residents and business owners.

Residential Smoke Detector Compliance Inspections
Residential smoke detector compliance inspections for resale are scheduled on  Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00-12:00 and afternoons from 1:00-4:00. Applications are needed to be completed 48 hours before the inspection. There is a thirty-dollar ($30.00) fee for the inspection, payable to the Town of Narragansett due at the time of the application.

Carbon Monoxide Rules
  NEW DWELLINGS:  
1. All new residential building with permits issued after January 1, 2002 with gas appliances.
2. A minimum of one CO detector is required per occupied level.
3. Detectors must be located outside sleeping areas, if sleeping rooms are separated by other use areas a detector is required outside each.
4. The rule of thumb is the detector shall be no more than ten (10 feet from a bedroom.
5. Detectors must be hard wired using 120 volts.
6. Detectors shall be mounted in accordance with manufacturer’s specs.
7. By Board of Appeal Formal Interpretation 01-02 if a bedroom has a heating unit either portable or permanent there shall be a CO detector in the bedroom.

EXISTING DWELLINGS
1. The transfer of title after January 1, 2002 will require Carbon Monoxide Detectors in all one, two, and three family houses, and all apartment buildings.
2. A minimum of one CO detector per occupied level of the home is required.
3. Detectors must be located outside sleeping areas, if sleeping rooms are separated by other use areas a detector is required outside each.
4. If a bedroom is directly off a kitchen the detector shall be mounted in the kitchen in accordance with the manufacturer’s specs.
5. All CO detectors shall be mounted using the manufacturer’s specifications.
6. Detectors may be battery, plug-in or hard wired.
7. All detectors shall be provided with a visible intermittent or steady “power on” indicator and sound a minimum of 85dBA at ten feet.
8. By Board of Appeal Formal Interpretation 01-02 if a bedroom has a heating unit either portable or permanent there shall be a CO detector in the bedroom.
9. The fee for an inspection will increase to thirty (30) dollars.

Burning Permits
Open burning of any type requires a written permit. Burning permits are issued on the day you wish to burn with weather pending conditions. In all instances fires must be attended until fully extinguished. The material to be burned shall be clean brush or untreated wood.  
There is no fee for a burning permit. During March 15 – May 15 permits are issued for burning BEFORE 10:00 a.m. or AFTER 5:00 p.m.

Free Blood Pressure Screenings  
Blood Pressure screenings are free and available at all three stations.  All you need to do is stop in at a convenient time for you.

Fire Safety For Kids
You can never be too young to learn fire safety. We show age appropriate videos, demonstrate what it would be like in a fire, and a allow hands on tour of the fire and rescue vehicles to teach fire safety to children. The national fire safety week is in October and many teachers take the opportunity to come and see us. Call to schedule a time

CPR Classes  
The Narragansett Fire Department offers FREE CPR classes to the general public quarterly. They also offer FREE CPR classes for area restaurants and businesses. If you have a group that needs CPR certification – a class can be set up for you. Call to see when the next CPR class is scheduled for

Obtaining Reports
 Fire incident reports are available for a nominal fee and can be picked up our headquarters. Call ahead for your report and we will have it ready for you when you come in.

Fire Prevention Bureau 
The fire prevention bureau is staffed by our fire marshal. The Fire Marshal’s office is located at the Narragansett Town Hall in with the building inspector’s office. The Fire Marshal serves many functions including:
